Meet Joker the Rescue Boy

This is Joker, one of our own rescue boys. He spent the first year or year and a half (no one knows for sure how old he is) of his life on a chain in someone's back yard. He came from a puppy mill.

He is missing two toes on his right front foot that causes him some discomfort. If reports we have gotten are true, he lost his toes in an accident at approximately 6 weeks of age. Since the puppymill could not sell him in that condition, he was given away, and then given away again. He received no training, no socialization and judging by his condition when he arrived here, very little to eat. He was little more than skin and bones. His coat was more brown than black.

He is frightened of strangers (particularly of men) and apparently has been kicked around. He is eager to please, starved for attention and has a sweet disposition. Since coming to us, he has been neutered, fed regularly and is working on socialization and obedience. He weighs about 80 lbs. and is nicely filled out. He is quite small for an adult male Rottweiler.

His biggest problem is that he still is learning how to play, and what the boundaries of good behavior are. These lessons are ongoing, and regularly he has to be reminded not to get too excited.

His favorite thing is being brushed.. He stands as proudly as any show dog being groomed for the ring. His missing toes limit much of the activity he'd like to participate in, unfortunately, because his foot is easily irritated.

Many people get a Rottweiler like Joker without being properly informed as to how much time, energy and effort they are going to require. Without proper training and socialization, they end up with a large, out of control animal that can even be dangerous. This is not the fault of the dog itself, or the breed in general. In most cases, it is the fault of the owner. Often these dogs are given up to shelters or simply abandoned.

We think that Rotts are the best dogs in the world!

BUT--they are NOT the perfect dog for everyone.

Please think carefully before you bring home ANY dog....they are your responsibility for their entire life.
